SAP HANA, the first Translytical Data PlatformSeptember 7, 2020
S/4 HANA is the 4th ERP suite developed by SAP. While the evolution of ERP dates back to 1979 when SAP R/2 was released, the current solution which was first launched in 2015 is a truly modern 21st century ERP. It enables organizations to work seamlessly in a digital economy and enterprises who have been running SAP ERP for the last four decades slowly start thinking about the business benefits of S/4 HANA and if they should adopt this modern ERP solution.
What are the benefits?
- Real-time system with key performance indicators instantly refreshed
- Elimination of end-of-period batch bottlenecks
- Continuous intercompany reconciliation and financial reporting visibility
- Profitability analysis and line-item detail reconciliation
- Automation for routine tasks
- Full management visibility of close tasks
There are a lot of options on how to get there. We nailed it down to three so called transition scenarios. Depending on the deployment model (Cloud (SaaS), HEC (IaaS) or On-premise) and maturity level (Finance or full Enterprise Management), the path to a digital future looks more like a labyrinth than a straight line. This is the case, because you may have a lot of requirements to carry over and don’t want to digest too many changes at a time. However, you also might be trapped with too many corridors that you want to try out before you even realize that it means changes to your custom coding as well as changes in how your system works today.
But let’s back up a little bit. These are the three transition scenarios for S/4 HANA:
- Scenario 1: New Implementation
This is a new implementation (green field): customers who are migrating from a non-SAP legacy system or from an SAP ERP system and implementing a fresh system that requires an initial data load. In this scenario, the S/4 HANA system is implemented, and master and transactional data are migrated from the legacy system.
- Scenario 2: System Conversion
This is a complete conversion of an existing SAP Business Suite system to S/4 HANA (lift & shift): customers who want to change their current SAP ERP system to S/4 HANA. This scenario is technically based on Software Update Manager (SUM) with Database Migration Option (DMO) in case the customer is not yet on SAP HANA as the underlying database.
- Scenario 3: Landscape Transformation
This is a consolidation of current regional SAP systems into one global S/4 HANA system or a split out of different parts of a system: customers who want to consolidate their landscape or carve out selected entities (such as a company code) or processes into a single S/4 HANA system.
